Artist Statement
Ellen Doss is a multidisciplinary artist working in painting and ceramics, exploring light, movement, and the quiet tension between energy and stillness.
Originally trained as a painter, she studied figurative drawing and painting at the Art Students League of New York, where she developed a deep sensitivity to observation and material. After relocating to Houston, her time at the Glassell School of Art encouraged a shift toward experimentation, opening her work into a more intuitive and abstract language.
In 2024, Doss turned to ceramics, a medium that quickly became integral to her practice. Her handbuilt vessels—organic, rhythmic, and often floral in spirit—feel as though they are in motion. Glazes move and gather across the surface, creating moments of unpredictability that mirror the gestural qualities of her paintings.
Working in clay has reshaped her approach to painting, loosening control and inviting chance. The two mediums now exist in conversation, each pushing the other toward greater freedom, sensitivity, and responsiveness.
Across both practices, Doss is drawn to the act of finding light—of holding a moment that feels at once expansive and grounded. Her work lives in that space: where movement softens into stillness, and where a sense of openness, joy, and quiet presence can emerge.
